What is a DVGW-tested water softening system - decalcifying system


The DVGW, the German association for gas and water, stands for technical self-administration in the gas and water sector. Its technical regulations are the basis for safety and reliability in the German gas and water supply, requirement according to DIN 1988. A possible replacement for softening systems that have not been tested by the DVGW is made possible by the use of a system separator. DVGW certification is reliable evidence of compliance with the recognized rules of technology.


According to this, water softening systems are checked at the manufacturer's request to determine whether they meet certain criteria. In addition to general safety-related issues, it is required for DVGW-tested water softening systems that they are at least 80% effective. A germ protection in the form of a chlorine disinfection unit is available and that a backflow of treated and softened water into the public water supply network is not possible. The germ protection mode required by the DVGW is in principle a good idea, but in practice it has been shown that unpleasant changes in taste can occur every now and then (especially in old buildings) and the use of a downstream dosing station with a dosing agent is necessary especially for your pipeline. The germ protection is achieved by electrolysis,by using an electrode to split the sodium chloride in the brine solution into its components chlorine and sodium. The sodium chloride dissolved for regeneration only provides 99% protection against germs.

The use of a chlorine disinfection unit ensures 100% protection against germs, if no water has been removed after four days, a so-called forced regeneration is carried out. This prevents over-concentration of germs. After the disinfection process, the system is then thoroughly rinsed. A pipe or system separator or non-return valve is mandatory for water softening systems that have not been tested by the DVGW.

As a rule, only DVGW-tested systems have the non-return valve. The price advantage of the non-DVGW-tested systems is still given with our water softening systems.

We believe that in the private sector a volume-controlled / computer-controlled cabinet softener / individual softener is sufficient. A DVGW-tested system is not absolutely necessary, but a pipe separator must then be installed in front of the water softener.

If you want to be on the safe side, a DVGW-tested decalcification system is the best choice. However, this does not mean that water softening systems that have not been tested are less reliable.

In the industrial sector, the water softening systems are generally not DVGW-tested, although the requirements there are often much higher.

The function of a water softener as a short description

Water softening according to the ion exchange principle is a treatment process. Here, cations, in particular calcium ions and magnesium ions, which are responsible for the hardness of the water, are exchanged for sodium ions using cation exchange resins.

A strongly acidic cation exchanger in sodium form is used here. This cation exchanger is loaded with sodium ions and exchanges them equivalently for the ions of the hardness components calcium and magnesium. Since only one salt (natural salt) is exchanged for the other during water softening, one speaks of a neutral exchanger. The water softening process can be carried out for regeneration in the cocurrent or countercurrent process. For this purpose, the ion exchanger is offered an excess of sodium ions. For regeneration, a saturated saline solution is used, which is produced, for example, by dissolving saline tablets. If the system is in operation, ensure that there is sufficient brine formation time of at least 5 hours,before the saturated brine can be used for regeneration. In larger systems, handling table salt as bagged goods is correspondingly complex. Big bags are then used for such a requirement, which you can request from us.



What principle does a water softener / soft water system work on and how does the ion exchange work?

The filter material used in the water softener is a strongly acidic cation exchange resin. This cation exchange resin has the property of replacing dissolved ions with other ions with the same charge, whether positive or negative. The hardness components such as calcium ions and magnesium ions are absorbed from the water according to an amount of water calculated by us. As soon as the filter material has absorbed a certain amount of calcium ions and magnesium ions from the tap water / drinking water or well water, the cation exchange resin is loaded and exhausted. Calcium hydrogen carbonate, a more soluble sodium salt than, for example, sodium hydrogen silicate, is formed from the hardness components calcium ions and magnesium ions. During the regeneration, which was initiated by the water softener,the filter material is discharged again from the calcium ions and magnesium ions through a highly concentrated sodium chloride (saline solution) and thus regenerated. The water is almost completely cleaned of the hardness components and reaches a residual hardness of 0.00 to 0.05 ° dH. Regulation of hardness areas

On the packaging of detergents and cleaning agents that contain phosphates or other hardening substances, according to Section 7 Paragraph 1 Clause 1 No. 5 WRMG (Washing and Cleaning Agents Act from 1987, Federal Law Gazette I page 875), graduated dosage recommendations in Milliliters for hardness ranges 1 to 4 can be specified. New regulation of the hardship areas

What is a forced regeneration in a water softener / soft water system?

Forced regeneration is always used if a previously determined amount of water has not been used or if you have not used water for a longer period due to vacation etc.

The set forced regeneration, which should be selected between 4 and 7 days depending on the application, is automatically carried out by the water softener to prevent the formation of germs in the filter material.

A water softener should therefore always be designed in such a way that, for example, with an interval of 7 days, the water softener only takes place after 7 days in normal operation.

  3. What residual water hardness would you like to achieve after using a water softener? We recommend a value for daily use in private households of 7 ° dH (degree of German hardness). For technicalsystems the operating instructions usually provide information on the maximum water hardness that is tolerated. Please note that partially or fully demineralized water is required for a large number of applications, so that water softening would not be the right choice. However, desalination is often wrongly requested. If you are not sure, do not hesitate and give us a call. For example, the heating system in which aluminum is installed, electrode steam humidifiers and solar systems should be operated with fully demineralized water.

  4. How high is the water consumption per year in m³? It is recommended to check the water consumption from last year. If you don't have water consumption from the previous year, we calculate 125 liters per person. If you still want to supply a garden, pond or pool with water, you should consider whether the additional amounts of water must also be supplied via the softening system and, if necessary, include the amount of water required.

What is the difference between the MKB control with a BNT and MKC with a Clack control?

The BNT 165 control valve installed by us is a quantity & time-controlled control valve which is installed in the MKB ECO-Line series. In normal operation, this control valve works purely via a built-in water meter that counts down your water consumption and flow and thus initiates regeneration.

As soon as the previously specified capacity in tons (an international specification of water quantity 1 ton = 1000 liters) has been used up, the water softener waits for the previously programmed time to regenerate.


The regeneration time is pre-programmed in our factory at 2 a.m., but can be changed at any time via the control. The difference to the Clack control described below is that the amount of water is not automatically determined by the BNT 165 control valve.

What does it mean if the previously calculated amount of water (the capacity) has been used up between a regeneration, the regeneration only takes place at a previously set regeneration time. Example: The water softener softens 3000 liters of water and the 3000 liters are used up in the afternoon at 5 p.m. and the capacity on the LED display is 0 tons.

The advantage is that, due to the short regeneration phases in the daily routine, soft water is always available to you, except during the regeneration in the cabinet and individual softening systems. Therefore, the regeneration of cabinet and individual water softeners should take place at a time when they need almost no water.


Example: You use 500 liters a day.

The central control valve of the WS1 CI determines the remaining volume and determines that 350 liters remain for the next regeneration. Regeneration is then carried out on the same night so that soft, less calcareous water is available to you at all times during the daily routine. Should they still have 700 liters of water available, the regeneration will be postponed for one night.
